There’s a reason why we call a cold a common cold, and that’s because almost everybody experiences it on a regular basis. From weather changes to pollution, very small things can trigger a bout of cold. However, for some of you, a cold might quickly escalate to a very painful experience. While initially, you might not figure out why you are experiencing such terrible pain, but a bit later, it might turn out that you are suffering from sinusitis.

Many of you must have experienced extreme pain and discomfort with cold or allergy for sure. This could possibly be because of sinusitis, which is quite common. But in most cases, we don’t realise that, what starts off with a simple cold can lead to sinusitis that may require a bit more care than usual.

One of the biggest reasons why people avoid consulting a doctor when it comes to sinusitis is because more often than not, they suggest a corrective surgery as the most effective form of treatment. For people who have a white-coat syndrome, or fear of doctors and hospitals, this seems terrifying. So, what if we told you that your sinus troubles have a non-invasive, non bitter-pill solution.

To begin with, let’s understand what sinusitis is, and why does it occur?

What are sinuses?

Air spaces or cavities in the facial bones and skull, positioned in the forehead, cheeks, between, and behind the eyes are called sinuses. Sinuses are connected to the nose through small tunnels. There are four types of sinuses shown in the image below.

  • Frontal Sinus
  • Sphenoid Sinus
  • Ethmoid Sinus
  • Maxillary Sinus

Moving on to sinusitis, it is the consequence of a long-term cold or allergy, which can limit proper nasal clearing. This nasal clogging allows infections to breed, which irritates the sinus lining. The irritation causes inflammation in the sinus lining, and forms scarring. The infection produces a thick mucus in the sinus, which drains into the nose through narrow channels. The mucosa (thick mucus) in the nasal lining thickens more, blocking the pathway, and prevents the outflow of the mucus. This limitation lets bacteria or virus grow in the sinus.

When the bacteria grow in the sinus, it causes collection of pus/mucus which is termed as sinusitis. The symptoms include deep, and severe headache that lasts for almost three weeks.

Why does sinusitis occur?

  • Anatomical causes: A deviated nasal septum
  • Developmental disorders: Having cystic fibrosis
  • Tumors in the nose and sinuses: These can block critical drainage pathways
  • Bacteria: In adults, one in ten cases is due to bacteria
  • Viruses: 90 percent cases of sinusitis in adults result from viruses
  • Pollutants: Chemicals in the air that cause persistent irritation can trigger a buildup of mucus in the sinus
  • Lifestyle choices: Pregnancy, working with children, and smoking
