Asthma or bronchitis:

We get a lot of patients who have just been diagnosed with asthma or who have been taking allopathic medications for asthma, coming to us asking if we can help them.

How common is asthma?

Globally, asthma affects 235 million people. In India, around 20 million people suffer from asthma.

What is asthma?

Asthma causes difficulty in breathing, congestion of chest, severe cough with a lot of phlegm and rattling sound. Asthma affects both adults and children.

Typical symptoms of asthma are breathlessness, you need to sit up in bed to breathe properly, you wake up in the middle of the night or early in the morning with congestion in the chest, wheezing, and then you go on coughing till you can vomit a little phlegm and then you feel better. Most kids, when they get an attack, they start to wheeze, cough, then vomit and go back to sleep.

Causes of Asthma:

Asthma can be allergic or hereditary. When you have sneezes, runny nose, itching in the eyes in the morning, if it is not treated, it leads to bronchitis. Allergic bronchitis is not a big deal, it can be easily taken care of.

When it is genetic, it runs in the family, either your father, mother, uncle, grandparents, or someone in the family will have it. Once it comes, it lasts for a very long time. Children respond very fast and we have been able to cure a lot of children with asthma.

Allopathic approach:

When you go to the doctor, he will put you on bronchodilators, anti-allergen, and antibiotics. Antibiotics are given for a short period of time to take care of infection but bronchodilators and anti-allergens are continued for months or years together.

What a bronchodilator does is, it goes into the lungs and expands or dilates the lungs. You feel better, your breathlessness and cough comes down. Eventually when you stop the medicines, for a month or two you will be fine, but with any change of season, you are back to square one.Then they put you on steroid bronchodilators or steroid tablets. This is a never-ending cycle and allopathic medicines only control the problem, it does not cure the problem. How long will you take these medications? They have their own side effects like trembling of the hands, weakness.

Homeopathic approach:

We get a lot of patients with bronchial asthma. Children respond fantastically to the medications. In children, we also give medicines to improve their immunity because every time they get a cold or cough it ends in wheezing, so if we stop the cold and cough in the beginning stage, we can prevent it from getting into a wheeze. While we improve their immune system, we also take care of the allergy that is causing bronchitis or asthma.

There are millions of people with asthma and they are doing well. In my 30 years of practice, I have not seen many people suffer or die because of asthma, there is some discomfort from time to time but it is manageable.

But if you are going to think that asthma is the end of everything and I am doomed for life, along with your bronchitis, you are also adding psychological and emotional breathing difficulties and it becomes difficult to manage both.

What happens when you leave it alone?

If left alone, your breathlessness increases, you will not be able to walk a few steps, sleep well at night and you will become a chronic asthmatic. Trust me it is a very terrible situation when you do not get enough breath.

People who are already on allopathic medications:

A lot of people take bronchodilators and anti-allergens once, twice, or thrice a day. When it gets bad, they take an antibiotic or steroids.

We start homeopathic medication simultaneously with allopathic medication and we gradually taper off their medications. We ask them to take it once a day initially, then make it once in 2 days, 3 days and gradually reduce them and use it only as an SOS that means only when you get an attack. Over a period of time, we completely get them off allopathic medications and manage them only with homeopathic medication.

Children normally get out of it and they do not get it for the rest of their life. A lot of adults also get out of it but few people continue to have this problem from season to season and we manage it with homeopathic medications. Some people will need allopathic medication from time to time but it is better than taking them continuously.

Diet restrictions:

I believe that cold curd, cold yogurt, banana, and custard apple increases phlegm formation. There could be various other things which you could be sensitive to, but you are the right person to decide what is good or bad for you. Nobody can tell you what is good for you, listen to your body, it will tell you if something suits you or not.

If you feel that after eating grapes or some fruits you had an allergy and then it developed into bronchitis, make a note of these things and avoid them.

Do's and Don'ts:

Do not expose yourself to too much dust, smoke, extremes of temperature, do not have chilled or ice water suddenly. If you are playing out in the sun or you are out in the sun, you come back and have something extremely cold, this temperature change can trigger an attack.

Breathlessness also occurs because of anxiety. When you are scared or anxious, your breathing comes down, you tend to have shallow breathing which leads to increased carbon dioxide in your lungs causing breathlessness, but this is different, here you do not have a cough, wheezing, or vomiting. You take a deep breath and feel like you are not getting enough breath and then you get involved in some work and this feeling is gone, this is anxiety and not bronchitis. Try to differentiate between both of them.

A lot of mothers come to me and say, doctor my son has congestion. I say what is congestion? He has got congestion in the chest. When I check, the child has no congestion at all. Does the child have a cough? No, he is just having congestion.

When you go to a doctor and you are going to give your opinion that my child has got congestion, most doctors will go by what you say, they will put him on antibiotics or a bronchodilator. Just tell the doctor my child has difficulty to breath, when he examines and if he feels there is nothing wrong with lungs, he will not give so many medicines. Let the doctor decide what is wrong. If you keep these few things in mind, managing bronchitis or asthma becomes very easy.

What would I do if I were in your place?

I would for sure not start antibiotics, anti-allergens, bronchodilators, or steroids. I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3 to 6 months to try and get rid of asthma.

Do not start on any allopathic medications until you have given Homeopathy a try for at least about three to six months. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to you in these three to six months' time. But if these medicines can help you manage your asthma and avoid bronchodilators, anti-allergens, and steroids for the rest of your life, isn't it worth giving it a try?
