Piles and fissures:
We get a lot of people who have just been diagnosed with fissures and piles or who have been on allopathic medications, who went for surgery and it has come back, coming to us asking if we can help.
How common are piles and fissures:
Around 17% of people suffer from fissures in India. Every year, almost 10 million people suffer from Piles in India.
What are piles/fissures?
Let us discuss both piles and fissures together because they usually come together.
One morning, you wake up, go to the loo and while you are passing stool, you suddenly experience a lot of pain in the anal region. The pain can be pricking, burning, pinprick, or soreness.
You pass stool with a lot of pain, difficulty and even after passing stool, the pain might continue to be there for a long period. The pain can last for 30 minutes, few hours, or an entire day. Along with pain, you might have bleeding while passing stool.
When you pass blood with stools, you get worried and rush to the doctor, the doctor will examine you, will probably do a colonoscopy or a proctoscopy, and tell you either you have piles or fissures.
What is a fissure?
It usually happens in people who have hard stools or when they strain to pass stools. You put pressure to pass stools because they are hard. The stools have to pass through the anal canal but when you strain to pass hard stools, it causes cuts or tears in the anal tissue.
What happens when you have a cut on your body? You feel burning or pricking pain and similarly when your anal tissue is torn, you experience a pricking or burning pain. The pain starts while you are passing stool and in some people, it continues for 30 minutes, one hour, or the whole day. The next day you pass hard stools again, there is already a cut that has not yet healed, it will open up a little bit more and it will cause pain again. It is a cycle of a cut, hard stools, cut deepens, hard stool, cut deepens and this goes on. This is how it becomes a chronic fissure.
You need to understand that the fissure will only go if you let this cut heal, and when will this cut heal? When you stop having hard stools.
When you keep having this cut over and over again, because of this cut, your anal sphincter or anal opening will go into spasm, then the doctor will say you need to do surgery and he will do a fissurectomy and he will release that spasm. You feel good for some time, but you pass hard stools again, it causes a cut and you are back to square one.
Hemorrhoids or piles:
Piles are a little different from fissures. In piles, there are no cuts but here the blood vessel gets ruptured because of the hard stools, and you suddenly see blood in the stools. Piles are not as painful as fissures. This is how you differentiate them, fissure is very painful compared to piles. In hemorrhoids, you have bleeding, either you have drops of blood coming or sometimes it comes in the form of a jet, it is scary. In fissure, you might have blood but a very faint amount of blood that is stuck with stool.
There are people with piles who bleed for years together. Nothing will happen to them. They say doctor I am bleeding every single day of my life, I will bleed myself to death. How much are you bleeding? few drops? Do you know the kind of blood that a woman loses every month during periods, She is still alive, nothing happens to her. Bleeding is not a big deal, whatever blood you lose, your body will make up for it. You do not have to worry and urgently go get a surgery done.
Causes of piles and fissure:
Usually, piles and fissures are hereditary they run in the family. Either your father, mother, uncle, aunt, grandparents or somebody in the family will have it. It can also occur because of eating too much non-vegetarian at one go, increased heat in the body, not drinking enough water, too much sweets or dry fruits. Prolonged use of antibiotics can also increase heat in the body, which can cause piles.
This is one of the most common cases that we treat online, I do not know for some reason people are reluctant to come out and say that they have a pain in the ass. So they mail us or call us. The maximum number of cases all over India we get are for piles and fissures. We have been able to help them a lot.
They will give you stool softeners which will help you for some time but as soon as you stop them your stools are hard again. They will give you something to stop the bleeding, this will help you for some time, then they will tell you to go for surgery. If it is a fissure, a fissurectomy, or if it is a pile, they will remove that pile mass (hemorrhoidectomy). You are fine for some time, but it comes back again and you are back to square one. Trust me that surgery is not a simple surgery, it is a very painful surgery.
Stages of piles:
There are two-three stages of piles. The blood vessels, which slowly become loose, protrude out of the anal region.
There are different degrees of piles. When you pass stools, the pile mass comes out and it goes up inside on its own, this is first-degree piles.
A bigger one comes out, it does not go in by itself and you have to push it in with your hand, this is second-degree piles.
Then the next stage is, it comes out and even if you push it in, it will not go in, this is the final stage where usually surgical intervention is required. But all the other stages of piles can be treated with homeopathy.
Homeopathy not only helps your stool become softer but also helps to heal the fissure. We do not give stool softeners they are a temporary solution.
Homeopathic medicines help in improving the bowel movement so that after some time you do not have constipation and there are fewer chances of fissure coming back, unless you go through something and you have a hard stool and you rupture yourself again, but it can be sorted. If you have a fissure, you do not have to think of surgery, homeopathy can definitely take care of fissure.
However, if it is a pile where it is 4th-degree piles we cannot help you but all the other stages of piles can be treated by homeopathic medications.
People who are already on allopathic medication:
We make them stop their allopathic medication and ask them to take Homeopathy for three to six months. Most people respond in about three to six months, there are some people that take a longer time to respond.
What happens if you don't treat fissures and piles?
If left alone, the fissure pain keeps increasing and it becomes so unbearable that you cannot walk, sit or stand. In case of piles, if they are not treated they keep on increasing. Your pain, bleeding, and discomfort increase day by day, it goes from 1st stage to the last stage where your only option is surgical intervention.
Non-veg is one thing that aggravates the problem, chicken particularly. I am not asking you to stop eating chicken, just make sure that it is less spicy.
Drink a lot of water, buttermilk, coconut water. Include lots of fruits, vegetables, curd, and fiber-rich food so that your stools are free.
Do's and Don'ts:
If you are able to follow the diet restrictions, just go on to drmanoj.com and see my recommended diet. That video explains how to eat so that you can remain healthy, that diet can also help you. If you can follow the diet and take the medications, over a period of time we can definitely help you with your fissure and piles.
What would I do if I were in your place?
I would for sure not start allopathic medications or go for surgery. I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3 to 6 months to try and get rid of the fissure and piles.
Do not go for surgery or start on any allopathic medications until you have tried homeopathy for at least about three to six months. Trust me, nothing is going to happen to you in these three to six months' time. But if these medicines can help you avoid surgery, prevent recurrence, and get rid of your fissure and piles permanently, isn't it worth giving it a try?
Take care. Stay safe.
