Sciatica:

One fine day you suddenly realize that you have a lot of back pain and this pain is radiating down to one leg or both legs, this is called sciatica.

Sciatica is one of the most common cases that we get and one of the most successful cases that we are able to treat.

How common is sciatica?

Sciatica affects around 20 to 40% of people in India. Men are more frequently affected than women.

Symptoms of Sciatica:

You have a lot of back pain and this pain radiates down to one leg or both legs. There is excruciating pain going down the leg, you are not able to stand. You can stand for few minutes but the moment you stand a little longer there is severe drawing, pulling kind of a pain that radiates to your legs. Apart from the pain, you also experience numbness, tingling and you find it very difficult to even put a step.

You get worried, you pop in a painkiller. Sometimes it helps and other times it does not help. The pain goes on for 2 to 3 days or more. You have difficulty in moving, turning sides in bed, putting one or two steps also. You get worried, you go to the orthopedic doctor, and they suggest an MRI and will say you got sciatica.

What exactly is sciatica?

You have a nerve passing from the vertebrae called sciatic nerve, this nerve passes from both the sides of the spine, goes all the way down to both your legs. If this nerve is compressed on the left side, you will have pain radiating to the left leg or if it is compressed on the right you have pain radiating to the right side. A lot of people complain of pain from the top of the leg all the way down to the tip of the toes.

Some people have pain only till the thigh muscles or calf muscles. Some people complain of pain, or pain with numbness, or only numbness. There are different representations of sciatica depending upon where the nerve is getting pinched.

Allopathic treatment:

In allopathy, the first line of treatment is painkillers, bed rest, and physiotherapy and if the pain does not respond with painkillers they suggest you go for a surgery.

We have had people coming back to us after surgery with the same kind of pain. The spine is a bundle of nerves, it is a junction box, it is always a risky proposition to go for spinal surgery. It should be your last resort.

Homeopathic approach:

What happens if you don't treat sciatica?

If left alone, the pain and numbness will keep increasing and you will find it difficult to do things or walk for a long time. If this progresses further, it can cause even further compression of nerves and the pain becomes unbearable leaving you bedridden.

People who are already on allopathic medication:

We make them stop their allopathic medication and we ask them to take Homeopathy for three months. In some cases where sciatica is chronic, we start homeopathic medicines along with allopathy, and over some time, we taper off their allopathic medicines. Most people respond in about two to three months.

There are no diet restrictions to follow.

Do's and Don'ts:

A lot of people after getting diagnosed with sciatica they stop their activities, take rest, infact the doctors advise them to take rest, but the problem is WHO says you need to take rest for about one week to 10 days, but some people take bed rest for about three months, this can go against them.When you take rest and you are inactive not only do you have sciatica pain, but you also get pain because of inactivity. The surrounding muscles go into spasm because of too much bed rest.

One week of bed rest is enough, throw the caution to the wind, get out of bed, do your stuff, start being normal, a lot of people because of the excruciating pain that they go through they get scared, and even after their pain goes away they are very cautious.

What happens when you walk cautiously is your muscles are going to spasm, the muscle spasm can also cause pain So the faster you start walking around normally, the faster you will recover.

The only thing you need to be careful of is not to carry weights, don't bend and do things, do not start exercises immediately, wait till the pain comes down. Once the pain is better continue with the homeopathic medication and start strengthening your back muscles with exercises. Over a period of time with medicine and exercises, your sciatica can be completely be cured and you won't get another attack of sciatica

What would I do if I were in your place?

I would for sure not start any allopathic medicines or go for surgery. I know that I am not risking anything by giving Homeopathy around 3 to 6 months to try and get rid of sciatica.
