Have Sciatica? Try Homeopathy

After a long day at work, you’re lying down straight, trying to relax and the next moment you’re alarmed by a radiating pain going down one of your thighs. This pain has a tendency to flare up immediately and disappear only to return again and again. Especially when you’re trying to turn, shift or get up.

This pain is caused by the compressing of the sciatic nerve and the condition is called sciatica.

Let’s look deeper into what this condition is all about and how it can be managed.

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body that starts in your lower back and splits down to your hips, buttocks, legs, and feet on both sides. The sciatic nerve connects the spinal cord with the skin and muscles of the thigh, leg, and foot.

You might start experiencing sciatica after an injury or it would just appear slowly and mysteriously over a period of months. It might be sudden and get better faster (acute) or last for a longer period of time (chronic).

Initially, it might just feel like a backache, without the source being identified. But in some instances, you can pinpoint it easily. Sciatica is pretty easy to identify.

Symptoms

The classic symptom of sciatica is the radiating pain along the path of the sciatic nerve. It starts from your lower back through your hips, buttocks, back of the thigh and down your calf region of one of the legs, it typically affects one leg.

The pain can range from a mild ache in your back to sharp, severe pain. You might also experience numbness, tingling, and weakness in your leg or foot.

How does sciatica affect you?

When the sciatic nerve is irritated, compressed, or inflamed by a number of problems in the lower back, it causes sciatica. It is a type of lumbar radiculopathy, which means the compression on nerves in the lower back.

Sciatica pain usually starts with a slipped/ herniated disc in your lumbar (lower) spine. When a disc herniates in your spine, it starts putting pressure on the nerves around it. This can result in a lot of pain when the nerve in question is the sciatic nerve.

Bone spurs, which means an extra bone growth on the spine or spinal stenosis (narrowing) could also put pressure on the sciatic nerve in the lower back.

What are the risk factors for Sciatica?

  • Age: People between 30 and 50 years of age are likely to suffer from sciatica.
  • Weight: Those extra kgs can put pressure on your spine, which means people who are overweight and pregnant women have a greater chance of getting a herniated disc.
  • Diabetes can cause nerve damage.
  • Your job: Heavy lifting, prolonged sitting, can damage discs.

What are the treatment options for sciatica?

  • Most people with sciatica do not require surgery, they get better in a few weeks.
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers help relieve symptoms and pain, but they should only be a short-term solution.
  • Using cold packs on your lower back for a couple of days and then switching to hot packs for a few days after that may help as well.
  • You can use some good stretches for lower back and sciatic pain relief.

While your first instinct might be to rest and take it easy when you are suffering from sciatica pain; it’s actually advisable and more important to keep your spine moving. If you remain immobile, the nerve will continue to be irritated. While staying mobile will reduce the inflammation.

If the sciatica pain lasts for more than 3 months, see your doctor immediately,  because sciatica can cause severe pain and weakness, numbness, and loss of bladder or bowel function.

If and when these home remedies don’t work, you may turn to alternative medicine branches like: physical therapy, acupuncture, chiropractic care or homeopathy.

All the streams of medicine have treatment options for sciatica. But, as mentioned earlier, along with any medical treatment, it has been observed that physical activity and lifestyle changes have a positive effect on sciatica and can improve pain, function, and mental health.

Why homeopathy for Sciatica?

While all the approaches of medicine offer symptomatic treatment to sciatica, homeopathy is one of the best, because it does not aim at providing short term relief. On the contrary, homeopathic treatment for Sciatica focuses on completely curing and eradicating the inflammation. This may require some time as the immune system has to get back to its natural functioning.

Additionally, homeopathy is a purely natural approach to treatment, with no steroids or synthetic medicines being used. Apart from these very important factors, there’s more to help you understand why homeopathy is the best.

  • Homeopathy medicines have no side-effects.
  • Treatment with homeopathy offers an individualized cure, which means you are treated for what you are suffering from and not for general symptoms from textbooks,  that people are assumed to be experiencing.
  • Homeopathy is simple and effective.
  • Homeopathy is one of the safest options because its treatment does not interfere with your conventional medication.
